There’s more to this practice than a trendy, spa service. It promotes detoxification and stimulates your lymphatic system which is an intricate network of lymph nodes, lymph ducts, and lymph vessels residing just beneath the surface of the skin.
Modern day living often encourages a more sedentary lifestyle, inundated with more stress and toxin exposure that can build up and create unwanted inflammation. Dry brushing, is an easy and effective way to send the puffiness packing while activating the lymph.
The benefits of dry brushing.
Your body’s largest organ, the skin, is responsible for about one fourth of the daily detoxification of your body. Dry brushing your skin is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that can help to detoxify the body more effectively. It is also wonderful for rejuvenating your skin and keeping it looking young and healthy!
Not only does it improve the appearance of your skin by sloughing away dead cells, helping new skin to regenerate, but it also stimulates blood circulation, decreases the inflammatory response, improves your immunity, decreases cellulite, and greatly enhances toxin elimination.
Why is this important for great health?
The Lymph System is made of white blood cells called lymphocytes and the interstitial fluid that bathe our cells, bringing our cells nutrients and removing their waste. The lymphatic system absorbs fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the digestive system and delivers these nutrients to the cells of the body. All detoxification occurs first and foremost through the lymph. The lymphatic system is responsible for removing and destroying waste, debris, pathogens, toxins, and cancer cells.
Dry brushing literally pumps the lymph system helping to move toxins that cannot be transported in any other way back into circulatory system for elimination. If these toxins stay in our systems outside the blood vessels, it attracts other fluid. The result is swollen joints, skin issues and cellulite, or worse: a weakened immune system that can contribute to many other illnesses. Since the body’s lymphatic system is stimulated through dry skin brushing, toxins are excreted more efficiently from the body through sweat, breath, urination and elimination. Since toxins are eliminated from the body quicker, dry brushing also strengthens the immune system. It may help keep you healthy through cold season and reduce the duration of an illness and accelerate healing by clearing toxins from the body.
How do you dry brush your skin?
Selecting a Dry Body Brush
Natural bristles are recommended for dry brushing. They’re made from either plant or animal-based fibers like cactus, palm, sisal, or boar’s hair. They’re a more effective and are a sustainable alternative to synthetic bristle brushes.
- Dry brush your dry and naked body before you shower or bathe.
- Every morning is best, but do it any time before a bath or shower, at least a few times per week.
- In addition, dry brushing your skin before getting into to an infrared sauna or warm sea salt bath will help your skin and your body to detoxify and stay younger and healthier over time. You can complete this simple and inexpensive home remedy with your favorite natural moisturizer. Coconut oil, almond oil or any other natural oil is also a great option.
How to dry body brush
Dry brushing should be performed on dry skin. That means preferably right before taking a shower.
- Open up the termini: located above your clavicles in the “triangular groove”. Using your middle and ring finger, gently and slowly pump inwards 20-50 times. You will ALWAYS start and end with the termini because this is the drainage point for all lymph fluid.
- Begin on your arms, using firm yet gentle strokes, stroke upward. Make sure to brush over each area several times.
- After you’ve done both arms, move towards your chest and stomach. These areas can be a little more sensitive, so use a lighter touch. Brush in a circular motion around your belly button region, always using an upward stroke. You can also do small strokes on the lower belly, working toward the lymph nodes in the groin.
- Move toward your back. If you have a lot of accumulated dead skin cells on your lower back (many of us do), target this area.
- Head down to your feet, and perform several long strokes upward. Then dry brush all sides of your legs. This helps reduce the appearance of cellulite, so pay particular attention to the back of your thighs and any other problem areas.
- Hop in the shower or bath to wash off any dead skins that may be left on your skin.
- Finally, apply a body lotion or oil that will moisturize and nourish your body immediately after your shower.
Dry brushing should be practiced daily, both as a preventative measure to keep your lymphatic system operating strongly before it becomes too congested and as a treatment for when you feel like toxins have already accumulated. It’s even more effective if you pair it with plant medicine that supports deep hydration detoxification and gut health.
